Real Help, Tried and True, for Panic & Anxiety

Panic attacks are perhaps one of the most distressing physiological symptoms a person can experience, yet they are surprisingly common.

Millions of men, women and even children have experienced them, and many find them occurring with unwanted regularity.

If a fear of the panic attacks develop, a person may begin avoiding places or situations in which it would be very unpleasant to be during an attack (driving, stores, etc.). When this happens, the avoidance is often diagnosed as agoraphobia. Agoraphobia becomes its own crippling condition, but one that can be "unlearned."

I know the terrain all too well. In my twenties, I developed panic attacks and later agoraphobia. Fortunately, I been far healthier now for many years, but it took a lot of patience and persistence to move forward and heal.

For the purposes of this short article, I simply want to share and encourage others with a bit about the incredible helpfulness of the body of work from Dr. Claire Weekes. The late Dr. Weekes (1903–1990) was perhaps one of the very first to address the symptoms and disorder, and to offer sensible help. A physician and writer from Australia, Dr. Weekes was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work.

It was because of her own experience with panic attacks, as a young woman, that she was able to gain so much personal insight and communicate her practical approach to healing.

Thankfully, some of her wonderful books are still in print (Hope and Help For Your Nerves and others), as is her audio called Pass Through Panic. As you will hear from others, and read in the many reviews, her work remains one the most highly praised offerings available for relief from anxiety and panic. (Other books need to be located at used book stores since a few great ones are no longer in print; often, these desirable books are extremely expensive, however.)

In her audio(s), her voice is soothing and her words deeply comforting. It becomes obvious that she deeply understood the fear and dread, and was able to put patients at ease. That in itself is a gift, since panic disorder sufferers so desperately want to hear that they are going to be okay and are not going crazy! This is the overriding message of Dr. Claire Weekes, which she delivered with confidence and eloquence; her writings and talks have been a godsend for many over numerous years.

The Pass Through Panic audio is a real favorite of mine--and thousands of others like me. Though her terminology from years past is different than heard today, the meaning is clear: You can heal and you need not be afraid.

Allow me to simply place the photos and titles (via Amazon.com -- see above, right).  Should you want more information on panic disorder and/or agoraphobia, please visit http://www.encourageconnection.com.
